Ola founder Bhavish Agarwal launched India's artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot named Krutrim AI to compete with OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Bard, DuetAI, Gemini. Krutrim AI was rolled out for public beta on 26 Feb of 2024.

Krutrim AI with the tag line "India's own AI" is the first AI unicorn in the country with a mission to enable the 1.4B+ Indian consumers, developers, entrepreneurs and enterprises by putting the power of AI in their hands.

Krutrim AI mentions that the create foundation models from scratch to build Generative AI applications, AI cloud infrastructures and the chips manufacturing are in house development.

Bhavish Agarwal states that Krutrim AI has been trained with over 2 Trillion token over Indic languages which supports more than 8+ Indian languages like Hindi, Tamil, Bengali, Marathi, Kannada, Gujarathi, Hinglish(Mix of Hindi and English) as well as English.

Valuation

The launch comes after Krutrim became the country's fastest unicorn and also the first AI unicorn in the country, after it closed it's first round of funding. During the funding round which was led by investors like Matrix Partners India and others gained an investment of $50 million in equity at a valuation of $1 billion.

Let's dive in deep

When Krutrum AI was announced on December it was mentioned that it would outperform chatGPT in Indic languages because it was trained with over 2 Trillion tokens with their own Foundation LLM's like the one created by OpenAI.

But after that following tweet from Krutrum AI

Where one of the users who asked the question "Who are you" where the user gets a reply from Krutrum AI like "I am an Artificial Intelligence created by OpenAI".

Though this dataset has been removed it had many questions with the users like whether KrutrimAI has build it's own foundational LLM model or it just fine tunes the existing LLM's with datasets.

Let's Experiment

We tried the Krutrim AI chatbot

where we asked few questions like "Who won the 1983 cricket world cup" and it provides the correct answers. which was not the case earlier.

We tried with few programming question where it fails to provide correct results

And even we tried to ask questions to translate it to different Indian languages some were fine and some failed to respond due to server errors.

Some places we got correct answers but not sure about the unexpected behaviours like the steps on how to produce contexts (Might be a dev reference 👨‍💻)

It's in beta mode so we can't expect it to be correct always

Tech Stack Used for the AI Chatbot

Looks like Krutrim AI is built using Next.js and the response from the server seems to be bit slower.

As well as when we copy the response it was copied with the HTML tags which is not necessary for a user.

And even few responses were printed on the console not sure why

It seems to be a good start. since it is in beta mode and there is a room of improvements which is needed for the Model as well as for the interface to have a grip in Indian market 🙏.
